You could always look at, and/or use the code from
msnt_auth program, (we use it for squid process to authenticate), if anything -
it at least matches the password hashing algorithm, been working here now for a
couple of years for us.

Yes - Apple's OpenDirectory server uses standard OpenLDAP as it's backend...
You can run whatever type of db you want from it - including samba and linux
clients.
