I did some tinkering. In Phoenix's
org.apache.avalon.phoenix.components.deployer.installer.Installer class
is the following method:

Some people have reported that error. I can't reproduce it here. I am
wondering if the people who are reproducing it have done something different
in their Java environment.
I plan to take a look at it with the newer Ava

With some change, yes. Not as compiled by us at this time.

FWIW, a related problem someone had (found via GOogle) directed me to
the Xerces FAQ (http://xml.apache.org/xerces-j/faq-common.html#faq-5):
Q: I used to be able to use DOS filenames with the parser and now they
don't work. Why not?
A: DOS filenames are not legal URIs as required by the XML
I'm attempting my upgrade with a fresh mind this evening. I've made a
new James folder, F:\Program Files\Apache Group\James, separate from my
other one. When I used wrapper.exe to install this as a service, I
specified the short 8.3 path, F:\Progra~1\Apache~1\James. I've
confirmed this took
My apologies if my comments seemed to be accusatory. As a James user, I

other James users who certainly have had to tackle similar situations.

My ISP it to begin
blocking / filtering port 25 traffic and require SMTP Authorization on its mail

to accept my SMTP traffic on a different port (can do) and use
Surprisingly, to me, the problem seems to be:

I must be on a list of guilty people who have residential IP addresses. That
seems a bit harsh. Oh well, I'll try to get my ISP to take me off this
list.
Ps. I found out by doing a:

Thanks for your advice Noel.
Today I upgraded from 2.1.2 to 2.2.0 and the results were as you predicted.
It seems the 2.2.0 version tries all the MX records it can find rather just
the first as in 2.1.2 (?) so I'm seeing much better results now.
Anyway.. The result is that I am now able to send

Mail for imray.co.uk is handled by depot.dial.

That's not a stock message from James.

Hello,
Sorry that the 3 comments below really have nothing to do with JAMES, but
here it goes:
I don't see why you complain about your free "ZIP" utilities in this forum
when java JDK provides a jar utility to manage archives. It's called 'jar'
and it's in the bin directory of your java JDK. And

I suppose, the ADSL provider uses a HTTP Proxy to filter the traffic and if you
connect the HTTP Proxy with SMTP protocol you take the HTTP Error 550, because the
Proxy can not handle SMTP protocol.

I've got a bit of a wierd problem at the moment with a clients email
account.
A client needs to use their notebook from their home adsl connection (pipex)
and through a free dial up (wanadoo) while abroad (via a mobile).
Anyway, their dialup doesnt provide smtp relay, and also block connections
