We used to call them "jiggers" or "chippers". 7 or 8 iron length, 8 - 9 iron loft, wide sole, relatively heavy weights, sometimes with a putter grip. I have a couple of them in my pile of cast-offs. They even came double-faced - illegal but my father-in-law had one and used it to great effect.
