Can you offer any suggestions on what I should look at?

Well a quick follow up on my original mail.
Haven't had a single problem with swiftel, got a modem off them, plugged
in and it all worked straight off
note - I haven't had to talk to their tech support and from my cable
access I am getting an mtu problem, but not unusualy for ADSL

A) All ADSL services that use standard PPPoE/A will work with Linux.

do you have a Ethernet adsl modem/router? had to experiment with my
connection, even though my ISP told windows users they have to use
PPPOE, I found in my case this was not true. I had to install DHCPCD
activate the Ethernet port then connect to my modem then connect to
the ISP. Also
you're connected to a DSLAM, so PADT is normally a
good sign on new connections.

I know of at least one person that got hammered by a bigpond address
over the weekend at about 20MB/h. I'm with the same ISP but my linux
gateway didn't get touched, suprisingly no scanning activity at all
compared to normal.

from one customer below - he hade 4 different IP addresses over the weekend.
These are their home networks
Internode ADSL,
1. Excellent service with good plans.
2. No upload meter :)
3. They have been known to give out passwords etc, sort out problems at all
hours of the day.
4. Looking at providing free sites (i.e. linux mirrors etc).
D-link gear is as cheap as chips at the moment.
