Hi Rick,
There are several well documented cases of jets losing power and making it
back for a safe landing. Our famous "lawn dart" (F-16) probably has the
most gliding time of any jet other than the U-2! There are also published
stories of commercial airliners losing power and being
Jim, before you spend a lot of time and money replacing batteries and
buying a new charger , etc. , you really should check out your winch motor
( actually you are checking out the system , which includes the cables and
the selenoid 's ) . The "cheap way" to do this is to borrow a Current Meter

Rick,
As I remember, my Dad told me that a 707 had an LD of ~15:1, not bad for
an aluminum ferry boat with jet engines hanging on the wings.

Hi All
How about one of the contestants of the California contest give the rest of
poor souls that couldn't make it the types of planes used. I'm already
thinking about the 2000 season and will need a new open class ship. Thanks

Taken literally, 3.1 will eliminate ALL combat aircraft known to me, as
those things attached to the trailing edge that we use to control the
plane are NOT FOAM! Has anyone flown a plane with foam elevons???
If you really want to get picky, the radio and control linkages are not

Not the intent at all Kevin. These rules were developed for
safety, simplicity and sportsmanship in slope racing, not
combat. The people that are objecting 1) are misinterpreting
them, 2) are a minority, or 3) don't belong in those beginner
classes anyway. The foamie classes are being developed

Many years ago a Boeing 727 in flight idle over the the Grampians (Victoria,

Jets can and do soar. Every jet (airliner) flight usually ends in a 100 mile
power off glide, often deploying spoilers just to get the thing down. The
DC-10 has an L/D of nearly 15 to 1, better than a lot of model gliders. Of
course max L/D occurs at around 220 kts (varies with weight for a
Good idea Karlton.
Except for the mandatory buddy box part. I know several 6-8 year olds how
can fly without need of direct thumb supervision. Taking the age group up
to 12 only increases the number that can fly (and fly well)
Take the recent Poway event for example. I think there were 6
To clear up another misunderstanding: L/D (and the proper speed) are in the
operations manual of every powered (prop and jet) aircraft. It does not need
to be calculated by an "experienced glider pilot". All jet airliner flights
end in a 100 mile glide (interrupted only by ATC level offs), so
And don't forget the Gulfstream that NASA uses as a space shuttle landing simulator.
They actually land the thing with the engines
running in REVERSE to simulate the shuttle's low L/D.

There's a water based poly-urethane which I heard works well (haven't tried
it so try it on a scrap bit of foam first). In South Africa we have fabric
paint which is sold (mostly for the home-makers) which works really well on
foam, and I paint some of my foam-and-tape models some really wacky
