This is usually due to an existing ppoa running with the USB interface
claimed. Are you sure the message your seeing isn't from a respawned
pppoa?

I'm afraid not. The ppp package from mandrake 8.0 is too old and does not include
ppp over atm at all. I had to add that separately. I did, however add the *same*
pppoatm.so that was working on

When I launch modem_run it can't find my modem. I have compiled the kernel
whith usb and ugen options and I also tried with and without the the uhci
option.
