I concur that running LMS directly on a NAS is not the best approach
these days.
I used to run on a QNAP but like others found that firmware updates
caused serious issues which although I could always fix simply took up
too much time.
I initially moved LMS to a different Linux server but have al
I'd get an old (but quiet) PC with i3 or above, 4Gb Ram+ and a single
decent sized HD and stick Vortexbox 2.4 on it.
If it fails (craps out) it should only require the box to be rebooted,
whereas a Pi + Storage of some kind may require some fiddling.
I would give it a fixed IP and might upgrade L
Is the server on Windows? If so look at the firewall and any AV thats
running and switch off temporarily.
Also try pointing LMS at a shared drive on the NAS and playing same
files from there - different disks

usb disk is highly likely to fail in comparison.
A 2 disk NAS in Raid 1 will give you some redundancy - not to be

But dont chown or chmod all the files in one hit. You could worsen the

Reason I ask. Client did an Avast upgrade which broke his previously
working VPN. Error message clearly pointed to network issue where VPN
host couldnt be resolved. It did from nslookup before and after

I think you should switch off uPNP in LMS - by the sounds of it you
don't need it - go to Plugins and remove the Andy Grusman plugin (this
is what exposes your players as uPNP devices in Windows etc)

I have stopped trying to run LMS on any QNAP due to these sorts of
issues. You'll fix one issue and a new firmware update will come along
and break what you have spent hours researching and then manually
fixed.

Is there a way to force a particular player in a sync group to always be
the leader of the group?
I ask because it seems that a server reboot causes individual players to
reload their last individual playlists and it depends which one you hit
play on as to what the group then plays as opposed to

I have had LMS running on various machines pointing at my NAS via NFS
and sometimes CIFS. As others had said it makes no difference except
scan times.
The only thing I would add is that if LMS needs write access - playlists
etc - then NFS user/group ownership needs to be considered but since you
