Several of us were pulling eight car trains, Bachmann cars
with metal wheels, this past weekend with our Ruby's at
Larry Hergets. Mine has a low serial number and the other
loco was brand new and around the 600 serial number range.
The new loco ran beautifully(slow) once we got everything

Geoff,
The experiments were attempted as planned. The first, acetic acid plus
stove alcohol, produced an odor similar to that of airplane glue or laquer
thinner. This was no surprise because of the chemical relationship between
ethanol, acetic acid, and acetone. The second experiment, which

in the combine to rattle the neighbors windows with the whistle during a

A while ago a live steam colleague asked about locating a microphone in a
locomotive's smokebox in order to amplify its own steam

Well done, Tony.

Bruce, would your or members of your steamer group be
willing to share with this thread your timing
procedure? I was fortunate that my engine was
reasonably adjusted but the one I am currently working
with does not want to slow down after I solved the
problem of steam pressure loss. By gauge

I've chatted with Tony several times about his RCS system and Sierra

fun with it. The only thing I've done is to rig the chuff with the reed

Hello Listers.
We just had a nice steamup at Larry Herget's house. During one of the usual
steamup discussions, one of the guests made the comment that St. Louis would
be a nice central location for a national steamup. I thought I would throw
some of the comments out to this list to see what
Thanks Steve,
I knew we had a chemist among us--I am happy that all my joking? had some
truth in it!
The smell of cabernet, you say--well I would have enhaled deeply!

Re:RCS control
My only big dissappointment is the one Bob mentions about having
to sequence the present unit to get from forward to reverse and back.
At present, I am using the directional headlights on the locomotives to
indicate valve gear position from a distance. Works OK once you get used
Tom, I think you are correct most of your comments. I live in the north
east. The National in California is too far to travel and vacation time is
short. Driving would be preferable to flying for the stated reasons you
gave. A more centrally located spot would allow car travel and cut down
Tom, my wife and I would think it is a good idea. We would attend if one were
scheduled that didn't interfere with the two big ones now operating. We did
attend the NSS a couple times, but went due to scheduling convenience with some
trips out of Seattle. We've been to several DH's and would
I would tend to think that live steamers in general don't need an excuse
to boil water, just a location. St. Louis would be great! Personally,
I'd tend to want to push it later in the year, say September or October,
just don't make it Columbus Day weekend - All good steamers should be at
the East
Chuck, I believe the Pennsylvania Live Steamers have at least 1 major
steamup each year. If there is someone on the list that is a member, maybe
they can provide you with the date and location.
Thanks for the reply,
Tom

The Accurcraft web site -- http://www.accucraft.com/ -- has a "how-to"
with diagram for adjusting Ruby's valve motion. Since my Ruby hasn't
arrived yet, I cannot speak to the procedure itself . . . Charles
