Thanks again, Jay!
Sounds like I've put it in a good place already, then. It's on top of
a three-drawer lateral file cabinet right against the bearing wall in
the center of the house. So even though my floors are wood I am
confident that vibration will be a small factor as long as I am

I've seen a lot of that.
Fortunately, most of the schools around here usually auction

You can pre measure and use heat sealed bags like seal a meal.

So that's why I'm looking for operating instructions for the Mettler.
Unfortunately, Mettler-Toledo

Maud,
I used a scale similar to the Mettler in my college chemistry class. Have you
tried the local colleges or the

Hi, Alan!
Great minds think alike. I've already got an Ohaus weight set (on
loan from my science professor friend) and an Ohaus triple beam
balance (from eBay...$35 with three weights and a fashionable vinyl
case). Then this Mettler came my way...
I really like your idea of using the Mettler
no problem calibrating the machine
providing you have calibrated weights and time and patience
also the machine is almost defiantly a beam balance with knife and planes so
it may not work to well as these are probably worn
you may only get it accurate to, 2 dec. places

Thank you so much for offering to help, Gordon!
As Alan mentioned, for this application I don't really need to worry
about obtaining accuracy to four decimal places.
If you can't find your manual, please let me know what would be the
easiest way to learn how to calibrate it. If it would take
