Jean - just went through a preterm labor scare myself (because of
strong preterm contractions); thankfully my daughter was born only 2
1/2 weeks early--which isn't even technically "premature"-- rather
than 3 months early, as she threatened to do. What you're referring
to are probably steroids

Hi all:
One of my colleagues has a daughter who is pregnant and is threatening to
give birth prematurely. She was given an injection that supposedly "hastens
fetal lung development." If anyone has information, please share.
Thanks to all who reply!

Good morning to all:
Does anyone happen to remember the year when warnings on cigarette packages
concerning smoking and pregnancy first appeared? Also, what year did
warnings on alcohol containers first appear?
Thanks so much to those who reply,

Hi Deb:
Someplace, way, way, way back when, I remembering hearing that children
who crawl longer have less problems with dyslexia. Don't ask me for a
reference. This is drawing on something I probably heard as an undergrad
way long ago.
I remember it because the idea was that children who crawl
Those wonderful student questions! Anyone ever hear of this correlation
before?
Some one told me once that the later your child walks the smarter he/she
will be. Is this a true statement? Because I just had a baby I want
to learn about the psychological needs of children as they grow
Hi all:
A student asked me a question as to which sense is the "last to leave
us" in cases of natural death. I know that the first sense to develop is
touch (about 2 months gestational age) and I thought I read somewhere that touch
is also the last sense to depart as we are dying but I can
Hi,
Someone requested a viewing of the suggestions I was given regarding
developmental activities with small children in the classroom.
I can't imagine that some of the private posters would mind me sharing this
info. On the off chance they didn't want to be identified, I've summarized the

Jim,
As I am ill this week and looking for ways to minimize lecture time so as to
spare my voice, I am contemplating a similar question for my life span
lecture on toddler development tomorrow.
Have you thought about using a really good video -- the early episodes of the
PBS "Childhood" Serie
Hi,
I'm teaching developmental psych this semester. For whatever reason, I
seem to have wound up with an extra lecture in the section on early
childhood.
So...I've been looking for something different. And we've already utilized
some films.
So..I thought...hmm...I have an 18 month old and

Can someone who is knowledgeable about prenatal development tell me to what
extend a developing embryo or fetus is exposed to mother's natural hormones?
One of my Lifespan Development students was asking.

Jean et al,
Is the word sleep appropriate when discussing life in utero? Anyway, I heard
somewhere (source amnesia) that a human fetus is in REM 100% of the time
prior to birth.
This makes sense because REM is related to CNS growth and maturation in
children -- but since we are in this line,
Good morning all!
Anyone know the percentage of time that fetuses spend asleep? Thanks in
advance to anyone who replies.

Good morning all!
Last night in my lifespan course, we were discussing perinatal
complications. One of the students reported having a preterm baby (27 weeks) and
instead of the baby being low birthweight, the baby, at 27 weeks, weighed
81/2 pounds. She said her physician was very concerne
