I think another outlook could be:
If you like Ubuntu but want a Libre version then Trisquel is for you, or if
you want newer but not the latest software.
If you want the bleeding edge, or close to it then Parabola.
But, if you do not trust Ubuntu or Canonical, and prefer stability over
Me too, back on nl.archives.
Oh that's cool! I think I've seen a bunch of TP-Links when I was in the so
called Computer Plaza in my place (reputed as the best and most diverse of
electronics stuff). Thanks man! I'll list this on my top options.
Huh, that's interesting. I wonder what kind of distro it'll end up being.
Emacs is not installed by default, but the plus CD is an iso you can get from
their sourceforge that has Emacs 23.something and other goodies. Dragora
doesn't have an 'official' repository, but there are user ones. I saw that
one repo had the new Emacs, but not for my architecture. I just
I'm just going to throw this out there, not expecting any sort of answer, but
just because I want to share the thought. It was brought on by a post on
Reddit about funding libre software development.
My idea is a variation on crowdfunding. It goes like this: when a program is
ready for
No freeme. GdNewHat people are working on an independent distribution. They
have halted their devolopment of GdNewHat ans suggested BLAG repos as an
alternative to their users. See the link to their new distro under
development. http://www.pugnix.org/
If you have the original ISO on your hard drive you can just point your
torrent client to it. I resumed seeding, anyway (I had to take my computer
offline for a few hours.)
I'm pretty sure LibertyBSD wasn't going to be released at all until the goal
was met. Anyway, I don't think this scheme makes any sense for an operating
system. This is an idea for programs that can at some point be considered
done, and not need much if any further maintenance.
Guix is hackable in Guile/Scheme, versatile (reliable less prone to package
management problems), etc. I think it was hackability mostly. If your entire
system is configurable in the best programming language in the world (Lisp),
this will encourage people to work on it more. And RMS is/was
Yes! (I would have said this about Trisquel's use of .info, but it seems that
trisquel.net was already taken. :D)
Suggestions anyone?
Oh thanks. Then I misunderstood that. :-) Thanks.
It seems that there are no seeders. I'd be happy to seed, but I can't get the
original copy.
I got it from the FSF mirror like Heather.
That was the plan for LibertyBSD, wasn't it?
I guess it'd work, but not without some exposure or advertising.
Perhaps it'd also work in increments. Say, the program is released, but extra
features are under delayed release?
It seems like he is building a cathedral. Why can't he release early?
Although it is possible that is is just SO innovative that it needs to be
unveiled when it's ready.
It seems like a good idea to me because of the greater incentive to donate.
What?
I said I won't buy on line.
a router with dsl support
LibertyBSD has shown two problems with what you propose: we need to
trust the author first that they are able to write and release the
program, and this method of funding prevents any cooperation with other
people on that software.
Not all crowdfunding campaigns use threshold systems (which have
I too can confirm this. Filed a bug as well

The BBC has changed the way it works and so get_iplayer no longer works as it
used to. (The BBC - making stuff with public money and then making it hard to
get).
The only method that now works (as far as I know) is to get the program to
load in the browser and then copy the program ID from
Seconded. It's not 'complete' (Hence why it's not on the FSF-approved distro
list), but it's still great. Not the most user-friendly distro, so don't hand
a CD out to a friend unfamiliar with GNU/Linux.
(I'm in the dust, sorry- the package manager and the Guix distribution are
fantastic, but
Your computer is rather powerful. You would get very reduced functionalities
with the AMD graphics (no 3D acceleration, maybe not the full resolution for
your screen, etc.). On the other hand, Linux-libre (hence Trisquel) perfectly
supports Intel integrated graphics.
The other major issue
welcome triplegoat!
Follow magicb's instructions and, as jabjabs said, if you encounter any
problems just ask here or on irc #trisquel on freenode. You will always find
help here.
cheers
Hi, Don't feel intimidated because you can do almost everything you did with
proprietary software. I made the switch almost a year ago and I can tell you
I don't miss anything, in fact, I can do more with free software.

Unless you're a user of Netflix, Hulu, or some other digitally restricted
service, I think the only particular thing you'll miss, if it applies to you,
is games. There aren't that many; I think the number of libre games that are
worth mentioning is in the hundreds. This is a good index of
As stated above, your AMD graphics will probably not work perfectly, like 3D
acceleration.
I'd recommend replacing the AMD graphics with Intel graphics- you can do so
for pretty cheap.
It's AMD's fault for not supporting Linux-Libre...
For wifi, if it doesn't work, you can get a USB wifi
Hi all,
I am new to this forum, and this is my first post. I have been using Ubuntu
and playing with its various flavours for almost a year now. I have been a
long term user of proprietary software and services ever since I first
touched a keyboard. I don't belive that all companys that
I agree, don't bother with Mini - the full suit works fine on anything from
the last 5-8 years easily. One of the machines I use it on is a 1.4Ghz Core 2
Duo very easily.
If there are any issues you have just ask as, there is always some here to
help out. If you need recommendations for
Hello there and welcome! Probably all the users of Trisquel started their
journey with computers as users of proprietary software. There are some
sacrifices to be made but I for one find that a price I pay gladly.
Trisquel mini is aimed at older hardware. Your brand new machine will easily
Sorry for my noobness, but why would I need a router with DSL support?
The one in the PPA is 3.12, the one in the repo is 3.10.
Most people won't care about the differences, but when I used GNOME the
differences were glaring.
Can you list those glaring differences, please?
I use a TP-Link TL-WR740n running open wrt (very easy to flash with a
graphical interface) and it works perfectl with my trisquel 7.

Ok, I switched to the Spanish mirrors but once again I didn't get any updates
for quite a while now. Anyone having the same problem?
According to the GPL there's not license header and therefore not free in
the fsf sense.
Having a license header in all files is not a necessary condition for a
program to be free. It's necessary that the license or lack of Copyright is
stated somewhere; and it's good practice to state it

To get GNOME Shell, you can simply install the gnome-shell package too. I
do not think there are many differences between the one in Trisquel's
repository and the one in the PPA.
Thank you. The GNOME Foundation makes awesome videos. :-)
I am excited about this. Of course, 20k will be old-ish, but if more users
contribute, BLAG can release new versions very quickly because Fedora is 98%
free.
Is it OK to install on a computer, for web browsing? I have BLAG 14k on a
laptop and was wondering if BLAG 20k alpha is in a usable state.
My *real* laptop runs the *true* GNU operating system, Emacs.
There is a MATE version. I took the Live DVD for a spin, and it's great.
It's their choice. They can give up their freedom if they want to. But if you
care about them, you will try to protect them.
The Hurd is to today as Linux is to 2004.
There is the ultimate free GNU/Linux-libre distro, GNU Guix. Try it, it's
great!
Agreed. I used Parabola for a while, but it was an overkill for my machine,
which I use mostly for Emacs and stuff. I now web browse on a Trisquel
desktop and use Dragora without a GUI on my laptop.
I made a mistake, I wrote brake instead fo break... Oh my, sorry english I
didn't mean to.
I am posting this from Dragora GNU/Linux-libre. Hello!
I was wondering, what do you consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of
Trisquel vs gNewSense vs Dragora vs Parabola vs other FSF approved? I am not
trying to start a flame or holy war, just some information that could guide
I'll start first.
Parabola is if you like to have the bleeding edge of everything, and want to
configure your environment yourself.
Trisquel is no-nonsense for home work. Works out of the box, if you're into
that sort of thing.
gNewSense is Trisquel, but more stable and tested. Use this if
I haven't tested blag neither dragora but I have opinions concerning
Trisquel, gnewsense and Parabola:
Parabola is ideal for a person who needs the latest packages avaliable, and
they are mostly vanilla. Being on the edge have its drawbacks like the fact
that the system is more prone to
I experencied the opposite - had to change from spanish to usa serverver to
get the updates (108 mb of updates, mainly kernel and abrowser)
Chromium is not in Trisquel repositories for the following reasons:
- recommends non-free extensions,
- too linked to Google's proprietary services,
- there is licensing uncertainty over certain files.
