Still looks the same after running that
You are right it was set to never and so I changed it to "for any new
version". I have reset my computer and went to the update manager again and
clicked reset but there is still no button to upgrade to trisquel 7 and the
update list is still blank.
Never mind I just found it in system settings if that is the correct one you
are talking about.
It only had 2 updates to offer for me (see the pic attached)
I did both updates and nothing else appears now. (see second pic)
Is there something I am missing?
I do not remember using update manager before.. I use synpatic manager to
update my programs. Where do I find the update manager?
I have looked all over the website but I cannot find instruction on how to
update to Belenos from toutatis. I do not have an external hard drive so I
cannot do a fresh install. Is it possible?
How do you do that
I am using Firefox for now but I hate quantum
I think the fact it has the "Recommended by Pocket" section on the new tab by
default is quite intrusive. It's basically like an advertisement and it does
seem to be tailored to my interests (which makes me wonder how they got this
information in the first place). I know you can easily
I have Trisquel 6.0 and I don't plan on upgrading to 7 any time soon. I was
wondering if there is a way to get the most recent version of abrowser
because of security concerns.
According to Synaptic package manager the latest version of Abroswer is

I ran the suggested command:
sudo sh -c "echo 'foreign-architecture i386' >

nothing happened, still get the same error
Yes I have tried higan but it does not have everything I want that zsnes has
Here's what happened when I tried your second option:
trisquel@thinkpad:~$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
dpkg: error: unknown option --add-architecture
Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling
Thanks. Will this work for encrypted dvds given that I have libdvdcss
installed?
I should mention I've tried Brasero but I get the message "The data size is
too large for the disc even with the overburn option."
It wants to rip the .iso straight to my home but I don't have room there. If
I could rip it to my second drive then there would be enough room, but there
I'm looking for the quickest and easiest way to rip a DVD straight to .iso
Preferably something with a UI for my small brain, but if there is none then
anything will work really
I already have libdvdcss and can play the DVD in SMPlayer, so I know there's
no problem reading it.

Any idea which font I need to view these characters as well?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CJK_Unified_Ideographs_Extension_A
I need them for an essay I'm writing and 90% of them don't appear.
By that I mean he provided the specific package needed rather than telling me
to look through all 23 "hangul" packages. I appreciate the help anyways,
thanks.
I attached the output after putting in that code. Hopefully that's enough
information about the problem. What should I do next?
Sorry that only removes all notification sounds. I just want to disable the
sound when you change the volume.
I don't know how to use aptitude and have never used it before. I don't know
what information I need.
I marked it for installation and at the bottom of the terminal it says these
packages are "Unsatisfied" under the dependencies:
libao4
libc6
libgcc1
libgl1-mesa-glx
libpng12-0
I don't really know anything about the trisquel programs or who makes the
programs so I don't know if this is the best place to ask but
Every time I turn up or down the volume it makes a sound. I've dealt with it
for a couple years but it's really annoying and I would like to disable it
I'm running 64-bit Trisquel 6.0
I want to install a program called zsnes:i386
I try to install it and I get this:
trisquel@thinkpad:~$ sudo apt-get install zsnes:i386
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed.
He actually provided a solution.
Do I have to use a completely different font on my browser just so I can view
them?? Seems like a terrible solution.
It worked thank you very much!!
No I mean all of them.
loldier's method seemed to work without having to change my browser font.
I should mention that I copy pasted them into gedit and can view 246 of the
256 characters on that page.
In LibreOffice and my browser I can't view any of them.
I have already installed xfonts-efont-unicode which resolved some missing
characters but I still cannot view Hangul Jamo characters.
They are the characters on this page:

Finally! Thank you so much.
I want to keep all the stuff I have on my laptop now. I currently have over
500 GB of music and I keep getting more so I need to get a new drive. I don't
want to go through the trouble of setting up a new internal drive. I would
rather have an external one.
I'm using a thinkpad t500 right
Lembas is the reason people associate the free software movement with
autistic people. I can't even ask for some help without him jumping in and
acting like a complete autist. I just want some help finding a hard drive.
I want to buy this external hard drive but I have a few questions about it

It says it has Automatic and cloud backup, and Works great with Windows

Please don't turn this thread into an autistic argument about the morality of
using Amazon.

Are you actually putting the needs of having no non free software above the
needs of feeding my kid?
Absolutely. I don't see much difference between what you're saying and what,
uh, a thief or swindler would say, trying to justify what he's doing.
What he actually quite clearly said is that he sees little difference between
the two.
I did but the problem persists
There are levels of ethical actions. There's a big difference between
stealing or killing for money and developing non-free software.
Some software hippy extremists like RMS compare the 2 as if they are equally
bad, however rational thinkers like GNUser and I realize that there is a
RMS has stated so in an interview

I never said they were the same, or that anyone else said they were the same.

I use a separate partition on my hard drive for my music, but I always have
to mount it when I log in before I can play music. How can I make the
partition automatically mount when I log in, so I don't have to do it

Of course, some of these licenses (like the Netscape licenses) have ethical
problems too
Aren't ethics the whole point of using FOSS in the first place?
We urge you not to use the MPL 1.1 for this reason.
https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#MPL
According to this page, MPL 1.1 is not GPL compatible because it has some
complex restrictions. This also makes it non-FSF approved, so I am not sure
if it should be considered morally right to promote it on Trisquel. Some of
the add-ons
I buy CDs that I like online from whatever online store sells them cheap.
Sometimes artists will have their own free downloads and I'll use those. I
know buying online is technically SaaSS, but there's usually no other way.
I'll occasionally torrent a new album that seems good to see if I
We have free media. Whether one considers Facebook free media or not, we
still have access to free media. Facebook doesn't try to oppress every type
of media it can, but rather it collects data about its users. Therefore,
Facebook is not an attack on our civil liberties. It is completely
Given the terms that fbit was using to define SaaSS, they would both be. I
don't believe either are. When I try to put things using my own definitions
all fbit can do is make his own, so I use those definitions instead. When
other people butt in to the conversation, they assume that I
But to continue that analogy, many of your friends can only be reached
across that single tolled bridge on the internet. They probably know
that it's the only bridge, but they don't know anything else (or care).
That is their own ignorance that is impairing them, not Facebook. They can
make
The problem with analogies is we have to be very careful that they make
sense. I think your analogy does not. A bridge, in this sense of the word, is
a structure (in this case you claim facebook) carrying a road (in this case I
assume digital information) across something (for traditional
Just tried this and it has exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
I disagree. The intrusion into your privacy, the mass profiling,
surveillance, social mapping, predictive modeling and all the other BI that
is run on all the data given to facebook constitute attacks against freedom.
I contend that without privacy you cannot have freedom.
That's what a
No matter what services you use, unless they are 100% p2p, they will be
centralised.
With that logic, facebook doesn't coerce anyone either.
Because people use tor to spam a lot, a lot of the exit nodes are banned by
honeypot.
It doesn't.
Point proven.
So of course, you shouldn't join Facebook.
That depends on how much you value privacy, not how much you value freedom.
This thread is about free software, not privacy.
I run OpenWRT on my router, and it is easy to use. It is 100% FOSS, so you
don't have to worry about that. I'm not sure how well it works on an x86
machine, but according to their website it does work.
OpenWRT is 100% free by itself. The FSF doesn't endorse it because it doesn't
fit their guidelines. Namely, you can easily install non-free software on it.
Facebook's content can be rendered with a free software Web browser (such as
Trisquel's Abrowser). The mobile version of Facebook does not make this
browser run proprietary Javascript. So, unless you prove the contrary,
Facebook can be used with 100% free software.
I'm not trying to prove
Yes.
The whole point of this argument, actually this whole thread, is that the
social networking service Facebook can be used with 100% free software. And,
according to you, it isn't even SaaSS. Point proved.
You keep claiming your term Reductio ad absurdum like it means something,
but you have yet to explain the line at which something is considered that.
Anyone can reduce to absurdity, but who are you to decide at which point that
occurs? Is it just your own sense of false security that you use
I noticed there are a lot of CD rippers in the repos. I have tried 2, namely
Rhythmbox and Ripperx, but neither of them have a good GUI or barely any
customizaitons. Does anyone have a recommendation for a CD ripper, preferably
one that rips to FLAC?
Main customizations I'm looking for:
Flac compression level
Auto-name directory newly ripped files
CDDB Lookup
That's the end of this on my side.
I think we can safely end this thread here.
Despite all this, you still feel the need to get your last word in. You
really are just trying to end this with a moral high ground, rather than
defending freedom.
co·erce

You really are just projecting here; coercion isn't always bad. I never in
any way said it is bad to ask for donations, but they are trying to convince
you to donate by putting up those advertisements. That is coercion.
I don't know what oralfloss means by this. I imagine mbasic mode is some
sort of mobile mode? In any case I doubt facebook even releases the source of
all the code you run through their server. Much less give you the ability to
copy or modify it.
Mbasic mode is a mode where no scripts
My feeling is that I deserve control over the programs I run, whether on my
computer or not.
You aren't running them if they aren't on the computer you are using. If you
give someone a request or submit data, you are still not running a program on
their computer.
You are right that it is
Using facebook is still one of the worse ways to give up your freedom. If
not yet, it will be.
It is a stupidity to give one corporation (plus their associates, customers,
government buddies) all that personal information.
You are voluntarily giving information away. You are not forced to
Do the CPUs have the same architecture?
Internet forums have been around since the early 80's. Added to that,
trisquel.info is community funded. We are users. On facebook and other such
services, you are the product, not the user.
All of those are owned by people, run by people, and contributed to by users.
Where's the huge
Indeed, it is not physical coercion, which is what I guess you are referring
to when you say you are not forced to... I don't use it, so it is possible
not to do so. However, there are many forms of coercion, such as
psychological and social; facebook employs those types of coercion.
And
I believe this logical fallacy is sometimes called reductio ad absurdum. I
insist there is a difference between my posting on the Trisquel forum and
using facebook, a mass surveillance, data mining, profiling system. This is
not black and white.
They are both SaaSS.
Also, your argument
I already have cookies, DOM storage, and referrer tracking disabled as I
statde in my initial post. Clean Links is the exact add-on I was
describing/looking for. Thanks for the suggestion.
This works perfectly! Thanks for the explanation too.
I figured this out last night a few minutes after I poste this. Thanks
anyways.
This also fixed the DNS poisoning that my ISP was doing, so I am more than
happy.
Facebook respects your freedom if you use the mbasic mode. Privacy and
tracking is a whole different topic.
Bump. This problem has still not been fixed.
Starting today, my computer has been redirrecting me to frontier searches
every time I type in a bad URL. This is very annoying and according to the
EFF it's also a major security issue. I have no idea as to why it started
doing this, as I haven't updated or removed any sort of

When I try this method, there is no save option when I put in the IP

Intel can be payed by Big Brother, a.k.a. the NSA, to purposely implement
these spying features, and give them legal (although illegal) exemptions from
the law due to safety reasons.
Use smplayer instead; it has better codecs. The codecs are libre equivalent
of CCCP on MPC, and probably better in terms of memory usage.
Go to System Settings, click Synaptic Package Manager, go to Quick filter and
type smplayer. Check the mark for installation and press apply.
Do all Dell printers require proprietary firmware? I've checked the h-node
section for printers and Dell isn't even listed at a vendor. For school I
usually e-mail documents to myself and then print them using the school's
computer (with their Windows computers), but it would be nice if I
I have taken all the possible privacy measures I can possibly take with
Abrowser. I have NoScript on 24/7, RequestPolicy on 24/7, no permanent

storage turned off. and I have network.http.sendRefererHeader set to 0.
Yet,
I haven't tried FireGloves. Does it just mask your browser's user_agent? I'm
not sure they could track my browser by its fingerprints considering many
other browsers, probably have the same fingerprints.
Here's my results.
I guess it makes sense that making the fingerprint more generic is less prone
to tracking. Thanks for the info. Although I belive onpon4 is right about the
URL, which I think is very sneaky. Is there any add-on that will disable
refids or other sorts of tracking prefixs on URLs?
That sounds like a very good idea for an add-on to make, espcially for the
privacy-aware users. You can tell that the browsing lists are actually stored
server-side because you can delete items from the history and the link will
remain the same. This can be temporarily linked to your IP, and
The fact that the list from Amazon history is server-side is a sneaky idea to
me. Usually all the information is shoved into a long suffix on the URL, but
in this case it is actually stored on their servers; that is what's new to
me. If the information is stored on their servers rather than
I'll check them out. It's good to here there are more libre fonts.
Luckily for free software users, vPro can be avoided by removing the built-in
WLAN card, which requires proprietary firmware anyways. Unless there is a
backdoor built in to a backdoor, then this is likely the easiest way to fix a
problem like this.
