Title:
System usually crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird
To
The bug showed up again today. The whole system has started to crash
consistently whenever I try to start up Firefox or Thunderbird. Yet it
worked well all day, for about eight hours steady. And I was using
Firefox frequently during the day. I also used Thunderbird this morning.
It is difficult
Hi. Yesterday, I completely erased the entire system and reinstalled
13.04 from scratch, since the other reinstalation did not work well. Now
the system configuration is:
Gnome 3.6.3
Kernel 3.8.0-29-generic (#42-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 13 19:40:39 UTC 2013)
GCC Version 4.7
I changed from the nouveau to the nvidia drivers and, so far, it seems
more stable. I have not been able to cause my system to crash yet. After
more testing I will get back to you.
The drivers I am using are called nvidia-304, tested and
nvidia-304-upgrades. I have not tried the other available
I don't think I can get you the information you want, because I had to
change the system. So that information likely would no longer exist.
It all started when I tried the nvidia-173 driver. After rebooting, it
just came up with a blank, black screen. So, to get the system running
at all, I had
Sorry, I can't do anything right now.
My mouse does not work and my monitor refuses to run in its normal
resolution. I have been working since this morning, trying to get this
system to run. Now I'm trying to backup data and install 13.04 yet
again.

Hi. I tried to make sense of the documentation about doing a bisect,
but I simply cannot understand it. So I think I will just avoid doing a
bisect between Quantal and Raring, in order to identify the commit that
caused this regression. Still, the system works well enough for now.
And I have
Hi. Sorry for the delay. Forgot about testing the 3.11 kernel. But I

Still crashing and requiring a cold boot. Tried loading Firefox from a

Hi. The output from the terminal command you gave me is:

The old BIOS version was 0704 and its build date was 05/19/09.
After updating the BIOS, I shut down the system and rebooted. Then I
tried to run Thunderbird and the system crashed. After a cold boot, I

By the way, I thought I should mention that I have two hard drives on my
computer, one with Windows XP and another with Xubuntu. So I can choose
which system I want to boot up from the grub menu. Today I booted up XP
and installed Thunderbird. I already had Firefox on the XP system. Both

Hi. I followed the instructions for installing the latest upstream
kernel for the AMD. The header and image files for AMD, as well as the
header for all, were installed. Now sysinfo says the kernel is:

Here is a /var/log/dmesg file as it was immediately after a system crash
and cold boot (see under the line of asterisks below). Following this, I
included the endings of two other dmesg files, showing what came after

The only changes to the system, since recent updates, is that the kernel
is now 3.8.0-22 generic.
By the way, the file manager is Thunar 1.6.2.
As mentioned above, the crash is not always reproducible and seems to
occur on an inconsistent basis. However, I can
My system still crashes after I updated the kernel today, May 24, 2013.
I have had three or four crashes, in about ten minutes, after installing
the updates. Occasionally, I am asked to submit a crash report after I
reboot, but rarely after the system crashes.

disappeared in recent versions of Ubuntu and with the computer I am now
using. Since I started using this computer (even with Ubuntu 9.04) I do
