Well it is a hard drive, an 80GB Maxtor SATA Diamond Max Plus 9 with all partitions removed. It just happens to be connected via a USB adapter, but otherwise it is capable of being installed into a PC as it is and being booted from. If I could remove the internal drive and connect this in it's

Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch), the touchpad only works when the system is booted directly from the live dvds I have tried. These are 12.04.0 and 14.04.1. It doesn't work on any kernel when booted from the hard drive. Just to reiterate, the touchpad did work when purchased earlier this year.

Have just found an article on Ask Ubuntu http://askubuntu.com/questions/337049/how-can-i-install-a-synaptics-pointing-driver regarding what should appear in the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Having checked the log file I found the following showing why the Synaptic driver is not being loaded.

At long last I have managed to do this BIOS update. The BIOS updates suppled for the machine can only be applied in windows 7 or 8. Have tried XP and although the logfile says that XP is supported it BSOD'd on me. I tried FREEDOS but this was time wasting because:- a) A floppy image is too
