After upgrading to Xubuntu 18.04 the digital clock is dispalyed

Thanks for that help but in the meantime I installed the v5.5-rc7 kernel
using ukuu. It gave some warnings (see attached) but still booted.
After boot, the HDMI/Display port 2 displayed as "plugged in" in the pulse
audio volume control and the audio did come through the HDMI cable and out

I loaded the signed version of grub via symantic and secure boot works
again.
I noticed that grub signed conflicts with 'mkusb' which was removed. I
believe that mkusb installed the unsigned version of grub and that is
why secure boot failed. So it is not directly a 15.10 issue...

installed in /usr/local/bin and was shadowing the official version.

I followed your advice and updated my bios to the most recent one
available at the asus website (206).
There is absolutely no change in the hotkey behavior.
I ran the commands:
