Actually sorry, the computer where the problem is fixed was an upgrade
from 11.04, not a clean install. In either case it improved since in
11.04. In 11.04 the logo wasn't grahics, just text mode and the password
prompt was in a text mode as well. Now it is all graphic. The fix I have

For me clean install of Kubuntu 11.10 64b fixed this problem. I have
NVidia GeForce480 GS in Dell Precision T5500 and the boot process now
displays the full resolution (as far as I can tell) Kubuntu logo and
asks for pasword for encrypted discs with nice graphic prompt.

Actually, it's better in 10.04, because at least it shows the logo, even
if it's big and ugly. It screws up in all kinds of interesting ways in
10.10 and 11.04.

I predict that this bug will affect that next LTS too. The frame buffer
doesn't support my monitor's resolution either, as I tried this fix
manually already. And it's a common resolution (1920x1080). The release
after the next should have been the one to include plymouth. Not 10.04.

Sorry, I should say 11.10 is the same as 11.04. There is random black
and white stripes, not big Ubuntu logo. So far its getting worse on
every new release.

does not work (blank screen) on this version so Ubuntu seems to have
regressed here. Also the consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1 etc) do not work which

I cannot even get the nvidia drivers to work on 11.04. But have tried
the v86d fix. It is functional, but the largest mode I am allowed is
1280 x 1024 (on a 1680 x 1050 monitor). The result is a logo thats
still a bit fuzzy, and the background is sort of chequered stripes, with
a gap for the Ubunt

1- Open a terminal and type this:
$ sudo su
and type your password
2- Install this:

3- Execute the next command on the console

theme-*". That way you have just text, which is actually the way I like
it. I never understood why there is no way to monitor the boot processes

Same here. I have a laptop with 16:10 ratio. It has 1366x768 resolution.
Also it has an ATi HD Mobility Radeon 5470.
With or without proprietary drivers, It still looks like sh*t.

I have this issue with both my home PC (nvidia MX400) and work PC
(nvidia Geforce 7300). I changed from the Nouveau driver on my work PC
because it is buggy. Small fonts have bits missing in them making some

I too think that lucid with all it's problems is looking like beta that
is why i use maverick right now it's installer(ubiquity)is much better
but it still have problems with Ubuntu splashscreen and that is that
after installing fglrx there is no logo at all just a purple screen at
boot only with x
Just adding a +1 for experiencing this bug. Also want to reiterate
earlier comments that this bug does not provide a user with a "warm and
fuzzy" feeling during the boot sequence. Frankly, it makes this LTS
release look like a beta.

Exactly, I have two Ubuntu converts among my friends also and another
one who wants to try it out. I will not install Lucid on their comps
because I can't explain this bug to them. I'm actually looking if
another distro could be a better option in the future. Ubuntu changes

Same issue here. I've got 10.04 running on my HD Home Theatre PC (in
fact, that I bought especially to run Lynx on).
Splash was working beautifully (sort of) until I installed the nVidia
proprietary drivers (essential for decent video experience etc). Now, I
have the flashing cursor / big, dog-ugl
Same problem here (ugly splash screen), but only with Nvidia driver. I
solved it following step-by-step this guide in Italian:

I am effected by this as well, and if I may put in my two cents as an
ubuntu user, for me personally, graphics trump speed, especially with
the (formerly) sleak splash. so to all who say that speed is more
important that a shiny splash, and that it goes so fast it doesnt
matter, as an ubuntu user,
Same problem here. It would be nice if this was fixed sooner rather than
later.

Thanks for the info. I'm not going to jump ship over this issue, but I
might if some of the other bugs that Mint doesn't suffer from don't get
sorted out in Ubuntu.
