This bug still happens with Gutsy and the old i810 driver when coming
back from suspend to ram (suspend to disk is fine). The new intel driver
is not an option since it crashes on suspend, see corresponding report.

I'm running Gutsy and can confim this problem is not fixed. Using a
different (and more buggy) driver instead of i810 does not look like a
i810 fix to me, more like a workaround. At worst please close this bug
using a won't fix status; not a fix released status.

This problem sounds disturbingly familiar to the problem with Dell BIOSes where

Adriaan,
Well, it just seems to me that this particular problem with the Dell
BIOS has caused several differnet types of problems, and on the outset
it would appear that this particular issue also falls into this category
as well.
Also, it may be of interest to note that this same problem has
I did not have any problem at any point after upgrading to Edgy from
Dapper. It seems the icon disappearing problem is independent of any
such problems. I installed 915resolution while trying to solve the
problem, though that didn't help.

I found that with my dell latitude d505 by flashing the bios to version
A09 (A10 and A11 caused odd screen displacement in X), and changing the
uma to 8mb the issue was solved.

Having this problem as well, so far I've had this on three occasions:
* coming back after suspend
* switching user (so NOT logging off), then taking the session back
* coming back to X after a switch to console (CTRL-ALT-Fx)
In all instances a logout / login fixed the problem.

A better solution is adding an extra line (Option SWCursor yes )
in xorg.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf Device section.
In my case, the device section looks like:
Section Device
Identifier Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated
Graphics Device
Driver i810
changing the default depth to 16 in xorg.conf works for me.
DefaultDepth 16
does it fix the problem for you?

The same effect appears using dapper. (I added dapper to the taglist).

switching to console.

I manage to solve this mouse pointer problem by increasing the video
memory on the BIOS settings of my laptop from 1MB to 8MB.
Now the mouse pointer does NOT disappear when I:
- come back from console.
- come back from suspend hibernation
Hope this information helps! It worked for me.
