I too have removed the Nvidia proprietary driver for now and have seen
massive improvements in performance. The only drawback is that sound
doesn't play on an external monitor using a HDMI cable - but apart from
that everything appears perfectly functional.

It seems that things are better with the 295.49 release but still not
back to normal - for example, opening a new tab in gnome-terminal takes
two or three seconds to complete whereas before such an operation was
instantaneous.

i haven't had this since upgrading from the release candidate (RC)
version to the full LTS release... make sure you re-enable all third
party repositories then update... I still suspect this might have been

Thanks for your hint about setting up the system fan with pwmconfig,
I've done the same and everything seems to be working as desired now.
I agree however that this shouldn't be something that users should have
to configure themselves and if Ubuntu is to take off on laptops and
netbooks

I was thinking of trying that but am currently travelling and don't have
a mouse or keyboard to try out. Hopefully the problem will go away with
some updates or something - it didn't used to happen. Interestingly, it
always happens when Google Chrome is open...

Also - for good measure, I also used the above method to remove the
Nvidia Vdpau PPA repository.
