I have just hit this problem using the release version of Kubuntu.
From the comment above about a non-empty filesystem, I have looked at
the partitions and it appears that despite telling the installer to
format them, it has failed to do so, as there are many old files still
there.

for the passphrase needed to decrypt the filesystems. BUT, if I type the

Solved!
The problem appears to have been because update-initramfs failed when
installing the new kernel.
This was because I'd had issues with the udev rules that were installed after
upgrading to 8.04 so I'd replaced /etc/udev/rules.d with my backup.
Replacing the necessary files and running

I am experiencing this problem with a system newly upgraded from Feisty
to Hardy.
Steps to reproduce:
* Launch kcontrol or System Settings
* Select Appearance - GTK Styles and Fonts
* Either select Use another style in GTK Styles or Use another font in GTK
Fonts.
* Click Apply
* Close kcontrol
This is a complete showstopper for me, as my daily backups require my external
drive to be switched on and attached, which immediately causes kded to go wild
and screw the rest of the system.
Unless there's a fix very fast, I'm going to have to revert to Feisty :-(

In my case, the UUID in menu.lst matches what the entry in /dev/disk/by-
uuid links to my root filesystem.
BUT... /etc/fstab refers to filesystems by the much more sensible (and
memorable) /dev/hd* names; I think because I edited it back that way

The new kernel managed to mount my root filesystem (/dev/hda1) but
failed to mount any more of them. running fdisk /dev/hda and fdisk
/dev/hdb I received an error message that the devices did not exist.

manually installing the Nvidia driver. Today I decided (for various
reasons) to revert to the Ubuntu stock kernel and driver and have found
