jerrylamos, we really need /var/log/Xorg.0.log with the intel driver. It should
not be too hard to get that off a LiveCD. If you have a USB-stick, you may copy
it there. If you have network connection you may scp or ftp it somewhere. You
may even mount a hard drive partition and copy it there.
Try to boot into windows if you still can and enable the touchpad. I've
just tried and it worked. I've read something similar for the media
touchpad on the side on my laptop. You have to have it enabled to have
it work. You can disabled it after and re-enable it. You just need to
have it enabled
I have the same problem on Intrepid 32bit 64bit, with my 4870x2

Geir,
As soon as gdm starts it switches up a black screen and the pc stops
altogether. No keyboard keys do anything, example Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesn't do
anything, so there's no way to get into the system at all. The only key that
works is power off.
What I need is a way to start X without
Thanks Geir Ove Myhr.
I will try your package later.

Geir,
I tried a simple
xinit
which gets me a black screen with a white window at top left with:
r...@ubuntu:~#
I think that is xterm. It's followed by an empty box.
at which point nothing works. No keyboard, no cursor, nothing at all.
Dead. And of course, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesn't work
Great work, Jerry. I actually misread your description in that I thought
you had access to a VT after the black screen even when running with the
intel driver. Great that you were able to get an Xorg.0.log anyway.
Usually when a black screen like that happens, the computer is not
completely dead,
Geir,
Tried a simple:
xinit X
which ran for a little bit, some flashing of screen, then left me with a
command line prompt. Hooray, I can do something! Attached is the
Xorg.0.log from that.
There's lots of regs dumped at the end of the log.
Anything else to try?
Jerry
** Attachment added:
So it seems that xorg is indeed alive, just not showing the output to
the screen. It would be interesting to know if it's also responding to
your (blind) input. You could test this by keep typing if you're in an
application where you type, or setup a keyboard shortcut to a terminal
and then run
Yep, for 2.6.30 I used the PPA linked above.
Since the last update, I've been running the 2.6.29 kernel linked on
'Jaunty Intel Graphics Performance Guide'
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582). It's a bit faster
and does not crash.
A backport for Jaunty would be nice, if only for
Geir,
I've never done ssh before. With your hints I got it going, added Option
ModeDbug True, then did
xinit X
which locked up the mouse and keyboard.
As you suspected, ssh was still running so I got the Xorg.0.log which is
attached.
It's a bit late here. I'll try the GPU dump tomorrow.
Hi,
Is anybody looking at this bug?
If so, is there anything I could do to help?
I can confirm the problem with Intrepid (although it's much milder), and
confirm that I am in the process of getting a new laptop just for this
issue.
Bye,
Merc.
