After several hours of using the laptop (not all in one session), I
finally got a lockup. It was different from the usual ones I experience
because the mouse pointer also froze. The only option was a total power-
down. (I've removed the battery some time ago to make this easier.)

This seems to be my problem, too.
The option TV_Format "PAL" isn't honored in the xorg.conf nor by a
xrandr command.
With Windows XP it works!

same here seems to be the frame buffer doesn't work correctly. I boot only by
setting the kernel options "nomodeset nosplash" then switch via alt+ctrl+F7 to
a terminal where I can put my crypto passphrase. To get to the grub menu press
ESC fast when starting the laptop.

The third patch is 189_xdmx_destroywindow.patch, which is needed to
prevent xdmx segfaults when a window gets closed. It is picked from xorg
upstream commit f713f447a2110718dfc091380699362d76f0cd6c. The only file
modified is hw/dmx/dmxwindow.c, this patch does not change other parts
of xorg-server.
The second patch needed is 190_xdmx_fix_pointer.patch. After applying
191_xdmx_segfault_on_start.patch xdmx will start, but the mouse pointer
gets mad and is stuck at the upper screen border after you move it. This

up to about 650x500 or thereabouts. It is usable, but many windows are not
scaling to fit the screen. The virtual resolution in fbset was set to the same
resolution as the TV.
