Per comment #4, I just downloaded 10.10 Alpha 2 and ran in live mode on
a Dell 2350 with the Intel 82845G/GL integrated adapter. I was able to
lock up X by going to Preferences - Screensaver, and selecting the
AntSpotlight screen saver. After just a second or two, my system hung.

Finally I installed Ubuntu 9.10. Karmic strangely, doesn't give me those
white disturbing lines and after installing the FGLRX driver through

Thank you for still working on this.
Unfortunately, it does not work for me either. I upgraded libdrm2 and
xserver-xorg-video-intel from raof ppa, removed all GRUB options, removed i915
blacklist and removed the xorg.conf file. My laptop froze with a black screen
before i reached the boot

It may be worth noting that the effect is far easier to see in lower
surrounding light levels: in darker room light.

Many thanks for the tip. I've finally managed to install the mainline kernel.
However, it does not solve the problem, or, to be specific, regenerates an old
one: I can login now, but X stops abruptly without warning, showing a black
screen with the following message: the screen, graphics

Due to hardware problem, I had to quit using the Samsung Syncmaster monitor.
I've changed it to an IBM E74 model. Since then the problem mentioned got
worst, since I could not even login to X, (I filed Bug #586090). People
helping out there suggested, just like in this bug, to install
