If adding radeon.new_pll=0 to your grub commandline fixes this, then there is a patch in the upstream kernel 2.6.37-rc1 which will fix this problem (with modifying the grub commandline no longer being necessary). A PPA of this kernel is available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/

A little update from me: Mixxx 1.8.1 works fine the past two weeks. After the freeze, i went into my bios settings and everything was screwed big time. After fixing that, my computer doesn't freeze anymore even if mixxx runs with compiz. Just the normal misbehaves. -- Mixxx with ATI graphics
