the screen starts to corrupt. It will vary in intensity, until the
system either crashes, or everything goes back to normal for a while.
When the system does crash, not even the sysrq-key works.

I reinstalled the package, no dice. I then looked around for it, and
found that it had been renamed to old.libgbm1.so, along with the file it
linked to. I renamed both, removing the "old.", and now 3D works. It's
definitely still a bug though.

I had a similar problem with Linux Mint 16 and Ubuntu 13.10 amd64.
Adding "nomodeset" to the 13.10 installer boot options (after the --, or
via the F6 add options method) fixed that install. Haven't tried this
with Mint.
13.04 booted without any changes required.

I removed developer's drivers and installed latest driver by jockey.
Ubuntu started work faster, but it still very slow. On attached screen you see

After I installed latest Nvidia developer drivers, I see very slow work
of Ubuntu (and huge cpu loading)

I'm just chiming in to say that the command 'intel_reg_write 0x9404
0x1800' does fix this problem for me. Like Chris Lord said, though,
there are still some other problems.
