digital connection always comes up correctly. The monitor connected via
DISPLAYPORT does not come up, even though the machine is booting
correctly.
It's almost like the DP path isn't recognized by xorg.

No, llvm-3.8 doesn't help here. I'm trying to avoid xenial having two
llvms in main. Right now our default, supported llvm is llvm-3.6. So
either we switch libclc to use our supported version, or we switch our
supported version to be the one libclc uses.

OK, I think I've got a cause, but not a solution as yet.
I've just installed 13.04 onto a new partition, with a new, seperate /home -
I'll call it Temp-home(TH) to save typing
On previous installs of Ubuntu, I use an existing seperate /home, I'll call it
PH to save typing.
When 13.04 starts
OK, Unity / status bar problem resolved in both 12.10 and 13.04
Solution:-
From 12.10(gnome-panel) copied all files from TH to PH, and re-booted.
Unity/status bar are back on both 13.04 and 12.10.
Got some tuning to do on 13.04, currently using X.Org X server driver, but all
looking good so far
Update:-
Three Ubuntu builds
1) 12.04 Working fine except Evolution which has been updated in 12.10 and is
not backwards compatible.
2) 12.10, updated from a 12.04 build.
3) 12.10 Clean install from .iso
Neither 12.10 builds have a working unity/ task bar. Task bar only visable when
gnome-panel

I am running gdm setup in terminal and it appears to be related to my
problem. The setup shows users at login. I click unlock to change to
autologin and nothing happens/

Thanks for your response Bryce, I am thinking of re-installing 9.10 as
the last resort unless you suggest otherwise? But if you think that
might be the best action to take at this point could you provide any
links that may assist me in the process? I found the following but would
be good to have
, in terms of the process involved in locating
package faults and reporting them effectively. I am overall very much enjoying
my Linux experience - problems included!

will start keeping a record of when freezes occur - lately they have been less
often, but it always freezes when after screensaver eventually defaults to
sleep (or is it hibernation - same thing?) - it won't restore by moving mouse
or pressing enter, so I have to shut power off. But noticed

Checked the site to do with xorg - the command to open a new bug is ubuntu-bug
-p xorg - should I then refer to this current bug number? - how much of the
details of this bug should I transfer?

Thanks for your input Akria. I don't know why it attempts to reconnect to
wireless as it is connected permanently to broadband via ethernet cable. And I
notice when I click on the icon (installed on the top toolbar) for signing in
to hotmail, the screens shakes slightly and a flash of a green
ok - will try now!

Thank you - that all went well - xorg.conf is now on the desktop - it
has a 'lock' symbol on it, so hope this is not an obstacle?

Tried as suggested, and I assume you mean to go to the 'File System' -
but then I am confronted by abbreviated names of folders so I do not
have a clue where to look for the required files - could you please be
more specific as I am not all that PC tech minded, though I can follow
logical steps
