What is the reasoning beind mod_unix being a shared

That's not true. _default_ doesn't make the vhost catchall,

A vhost with _default_ or * for that matter, will only be
default if, in a namebased setup, you put it first.

What you're looking for is actually called Reverse Proxy and is
(of of) mod_proxy's core capabilities.
See http://www.apachetutor.org/admin/reverseproxies

What is this "proxy plugin" you speak of?
Neither the error, nor the referenced source file looks like it's

The system isn't under as much load as that of my customer so
it's not that much of a problem.
My questions, before I go ahead and run the tests myself, are:
Is this fixed in apr 1.4.x?
Is it fixed in apr 1.5.x?
Is it fixed in httpd 2.4?

I'm not entirely sure, but you might be missing
ProxyPass ! /auth

ange, you'll get this.
HTTP 403 means Forbidden, the request is understood, but the server
refuses to fulfill it, for which ever reason.
That reason is usually stated in the Error Log.
And is generally one of the following three:

You're posting on a publicly archived mailing list, which is world-wide
mirrored.

Can you please paste the verbatim error produced by apachectl -k start
(Both, on th

Are you writing to syslog wi

Round-robin seems like the best idea, but only if you enable
sticky sessions.

(How) Did you build OpenLDAP? Did you build it against the same OpenSSL?

Or a core_pattern via sysctl, see core(5) for more info.
on FreeBSD:
put `limit coredumpsize unlimited` in apachectl
See core(5) how to set with sysctl a pattern for kern.corefile.
For Solaris see coreadm(1M) - which controls both.
I think I should paste this in a wiki.
