not include the password in clear text and would not need
mod_session_crypto
if that value were used for the session.

That reason is usually stated in the Error Log.

Sure you can, but it won't be interpreted. Neither by PHP nor by
Apache httpd. The list of F/OSS HTTP servers/caches which do support
ESI is quite comprehensive so far:
* Varnish
* Squid
