I have experimented with changing the default OO desktop (usually grey "out of
the box") and the Paper colour, but these do not affect the CheckBox
background. The white background also shows up on some other Dialog items
(Option buttons to name only one).

It is possible (but unlikely) that you may recover a deleted temporary file by
