The OpenOffice is your best bet, unless you would like to use the extra
clipart and templates that come with StarOffice. OpenOpen upates are also

Have you checked all your language settings? There's one in there to
accommodate Hebrew, etc. which goes right to left - - including
spreadsheet columns.
It's a long shot, but worth making sure it's disabled.
