It’s the synthesizer that’s actually doing the speaking, not the screen-reader.
The synths are now more human-sounding, and probably more autonomous
(independent of the screen-reader) than they used to be. This has

Back in the day, it was actually the external synthesizer not the software, so
nothing could be done.
That was also on MS-DOS, so things were a little different then.
It was entertaining while not helpful, grin.

word pease correctly by setting the dictionary to use a word that may not be
correctly spelt but makes the word sound correct.

Have you tried spelling the word peace like piece as in a piece of cake? You
would do this in the pronunciation section in voiceover settings. Maybe that
would work.
