If I stop a little way up my screen, I'll hear/feel tha first
vibration to go to home. If I keep holding my finger on the screen,
voice over will actually say

You need to touch on the very, very bottom edge of the screen, and do a smooth
slide up the screen.
You should hear a tone, keep sliding, you should hear another tone and feel a
vibration; lift your finger at that point to go to the home screen.
