Hi list,
I'm new here, and this post did not make it to the list somehow...
I've been reading many posts on this issue, but still am clueless. My dad
has a computer at home and needs help every now and then. He had Win98 and
we used RealVNC perfectly, now he got a new box with XP on it, and

Ya know, it'd be cool if there was a way to connect to the
VNC port on a computer, issue a command, and get back the
flavor and version that is running on that computer. If
anybody feels like adding new features
Xvnc has a set of basic keysyms in its keymap, then it adds any missing
keysyms on the fly as the relevant keys are sent by the viewer. This works

I want to use VNC over SSH from Windows to Windows systems, but I dont know
how. I read the pages about SSH on the vnc site (
www.uk.research.att.com/vnc http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc ) It seems
pretty easy, but there is nothing about the SSH server.
Is there a version of VNC with SSH build
Jorge:
Heya. I've collected a few tips about debugging a VNC
setup that your Dad should be able to follow along with. Have
him start here:
http://faq.gotomyvnc.com/fom-serve/cache/76.html
After that, point him towards the Troubleshooting
section of the site:
Is there a version of VNC with SSH build into (for Windows)?
No.
And do I need to buy a SSH server,
No, but you can if you wish.
or can I use a free or
open-source version?
Yes. OpenSSH for Windows - http://www.networksimplicity.com/openssh/
It's no longer being developed, though. Apparently

Hello, i have two computers with windows XP on both of them, from one i can
connect vnc using the ip or the net name of the other but from the other one i
can connect to the first one only by using the ip number because when i put
the net name y takes a while and then sayd can connect to server.
Bertrand:
Heya. Try this: when you initiate the SSH tunnel from
the SSH client, specify the VNC Server's IP address as the host
IP address, rather than the lookback IP address (127.0.0.1). So:
use: ssh -l username -L 5900:ip-address:5900 ip-address
instead of: ssh -l username

Windows XP does not have NETBEUI installed by default, so the broadcast will not
happen. If you don't have a DNS server with records for the computer and you don't
want to maintain a hosts file for your computers, you can still install NETBEUI in XP.
Microsoft has hidden it on the XP CD under

I beg you to just try it and I'm almost positive that it'll work for you as long as
you're on the same segment.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for your help, Scott C. Best sent me an answer which could also
help out. It actually would explain why I cannot ping the machine of my
dad. There seem to be a firewall in WinXP also. His answer is below, he
put also a link to a very useful and informative FAQ. Unfortunately, I

Finally, I put the AllowLoopback in the registry on the two PC and
