Hi Bill,
Congratulations in getting the DVD out.
To answer your question, there are 2 other ways I use to find out which apps
are running:
1. Pressing 'Command' & 'Tab' keys will show all the running application
icons
2. Going to 'Apple' -> 'Force Quit' will list all the running apps.

Solved it. For anyone who's curious I oppened the Utilities folder in
Applications and launched Activity Monitor, then used this to
progressively quit every running application. At some point I turned off
something (I'm not sure what) which got us back to the log in window,
from which I did a

I refer to my earlier post. The DVD that I burnt was a DVD+R disc. Could
that be why it isn't recognised by my computer (OS 10.3.5)?
Michael.
Yes. Apple's internal drives use DVD-R or DVD-RW.
Thanks,
Shay

Yesterday I burnt a DVD using Toast 6 and an external La Cie burner. I can
play the DVD if I load it in the La Cie burner, but the computer does not
recognise the DVD if I put it in the computer's internal DVD drive (ie, no
icon appears on the desktop for the DVD).

HI all
Just to let you know the outcome.
DVDs written using discburner in 10.2.3 can't be read on windows.
As far as we can tell the format looks the same as DVDs written and
readable on the pc.
Writing the DVDs with toast 5.2 makes them windows readable.( and is
about 2X faster than apples disc
Thanks, Wamuggers, especially Rod, Shay and Mark Secker, for the helpful
suggestions. The problem is resolved, and the PC is happily reading
DVDs made on a Mac.
Cheers,
Pat
