Hi Severin,
Turning SMB off unless you need to share to Windows PC always works better for
sharing / moving files to Macs.
After working all day using my MacBook Air I then need to share/move files to
my MacBook Pro that stays permanently in my computer room downstairs.

Well, all is currently behaving itself again. Checked everything as suggested

No, the XP box has 2 Ethernet cards one of which plugs directly into the
ADSL modem (Alcatel Speedtouch). I would plug the Mac in directly to test
but it means installing and configuring PPPoE which will probably take some
time seeing as I don't have the software.
The Mac can read mail from a Bigp
This machine has 2 network cards - one for ADSL and the other for
the LAN.
I'm assuming when you say 2 network cards you mean 1 ADSL 'modem'
card and one ethernet card?
If not and you've got an ADSL connection box with an ethernet port,
try plugging the Mac in directly and see if it works.
Greg,
The problem is probably the MTU (maximum transfer unit??) setting on the Mac
OS 9 machine. By default its set to 1500, but you need to change it to 1492
(I think). I don't know how you do that with an OS 9 machine. Its easy
with an OS X box. I used a "broadband optimizer" script on the OS X
Thanks Larry, I'll try that but the Internet sharing is actually being done
on the XP box so I wouldn't expect this to help. But I'll try anything at
this point.
Cheers

Hello all
I have a weird problem. I'm configuring a SOHO network for my brother in
law. He has just got Telstra ADSL and has it hooked up to a Windows XP Home
machine. This machine has 2 network cards - one for ADSL and the other for
the LAN. On the LAN is a 400MHz iMac DV (graphite) running OS 9.
