Thanks for the suggestions so far.
Video Play through Camera is selected and all combinations of the dip
tried all to no avail.

Hi Adrian,
Sounds to me like you are trying to record NTSC output on a PAL VCR.
The VCR may be able to play NTSC tapes or display the incoming NTSC signal
but it may not be able to lay the signal down on tape.
If it is possible to change that dip to PAL your problem may disappear.

Its got me beat! I have been trying to upload an iMovie (v 2.1.2) to a
VCR using a Canopus ADVC-100.
Firewire cable from the iMac (OS v10.2.1) to the front panel of the
ADVC-100, ADVC-100 dips' set to:
Video Format, NTSC Setup Level, Locked Audio Mode, Audio Mode and
Power-On Input Mode all set
