Possibly, as root, chmod 4555 /usr /local/bin/xastir?

when I do that I get hard fail on interface 1 messages. My file is
/usr/share/xastir in this case. I guess Ubuntu folks load stuff different than
the rest of the world.

debian, actually, does put things in different spots, some akin to bsd's take
on where things should be, some in logically named locations.
As root:
find / -name xastir|grep bin
THEN do a chmod on the file as Gale suggested.

Ok here is the terminal:

You might want to try connecting directly to the serial port using a serial
terminal program for troubleshooting. I don't think there is any terminal
program

The answer will undoubtedly be /usr/bin/xastir which is where the pre-packaged
Ubuntu xastir will be installed.
It was /usr/bin/xastir/
Lots of folks are guessing that you've got a problem with permissions on the
serial port, but I am thinking that unlikely --- if you did a regular install

Jim,
Yeah, there's something mising. You need to copy and paste exactly.
You removed some rather important whitespace between the '/' and '-name'
;-)

Ok I loaded Gtkterm fired it up and I get this error message
Cannot open /dev/ttyS0: Device or resource busy.
So the question now is how do I find out what is making the
port busy and how do I turn it off?
I bet there's a serial getty sitting on the port right now for a serial
console.
If there's a file /etc/event.d/ttyS0 then Alex's hypothesis might be correct.
On my system there are only files for each of the virtual consoles, tty1-tty6.
Mine is just like yours, Tom. Nothing about ttyS0 in the /etc/event.d file

I don't want to confuse things - but would you try this to show if anything
is sitting on ttyS0 (it might be something you ran earlier.
From a terminal screen type this and enter..
sudo ps -aux | grep ttyS0

Ok after a reboot I can load Xastir and it says that it connects to the radio
tnc ok but the computer and the radio are not talking to one another. I know
this because I can hit the transmit button and nothing happens on the radio.
I tried GtkTerm but I don't know how to input to it so that I
