make sure that their version is 1.36 (XQM) and 1.24 (Agent). The download

My SMTPRELAY.TAB was the only file changed, it looks like this:

if you are using the dns on the same box, then I'd use 127.0.0.1 (if your
dns is listening on it), because xmail wont need to look it up every time
there is a mail to send.
Being on the same box udp or tcp, is probably no difference.

By default Xmail server will do the DNS lookup via the root-servers.net, not
via the OS configured resolver.
If you set Xmail to pass the request to the 'SmartDNSHost' then this would
help -> IF your current DNS works as u say it does.

Looks like we're getting close.
The messages ARE delivered correctly, but not in a timely fashion.
It takes about 20 minutes to deliver messages to external domains and 0
seconds to deliver them to local users.
Is there a timeout or delay option I have set up wrong somewhere?

my xmail-server is having problems delivering mails that exceed the mail
limit of the destination server.
i see from the logs that the mail is actually processed but it doesn't occur
in the smail logs and is not delivered.
here's an example sniff of such a too large mail delivery:
