I have seen this be beat to death in other forums and such. Well here are my thoughts on this.
Always have something between yourself and the internet. Weather this is another box or an appliance. One of my favorite ways is using something like Astaro (http://www.astaro.com/) you will have to have another box to run this on but it works. The other is sme server (www.e-smith.org ?) this will give you an ok gateway as well as an outstanding email server. Both of these are based on linux and are really easy to install and administer. If you want/need and appliance type device you could always use a 2 wire, netgear, or watchguard soho are my favorites. If you are going to use the netgear I have found that the ro318 is pretty good.
