I understand, to some extent, why you'd put IIS on there - but I disagree.
Properly locked down IIS servers (really not that hard to do and maintain),
in practice have been very secure for me. I've managed a farm of IIS
servers for an ASP and in a corporate web services environment for years,
and I've not once had a security incident, although my web logs and IDS logs
indicate numerous attempts.
I'm glad you spoke up, sounds like you have some real experience with this. Have you ever managed any Apache servers? I'd like to talk to someone that's run both and see what they have to say about comparisons.
Hopefully you'll take my experience (and I think probably many others') into
account in compiling your list and take IIS off. I think unnecessarily
perpetuating anti-Microsoft sentiment is unfair to Microsoft, but moreso,
it's unfair to provide skewed information to the readers of the mail list.
I'm not Anti-Microsoft (well, I don't like their business practices but that's another issue), in fact, I think windows 2000 professional is pretty much the best OS I've ever used for a desktop. However I do feel that some of their software is poorly written and designed to do too much all in one package.
