Are your radiator fans coming on when the car warms up? Check that. I had
the exact same problem (similar symptoms) and my oil was getting cooked. It
turned out that BOTH my fans had failed and so sitting in traffic my A/C
would not work right and in some cases the temperature would start heading
high and I would have to shut the car off. On the highway, everything
worked ok.

Subject: SML-NON-P: Car stalls under hot weather

Hello all,

My car (96 SE) is having a serious problem when I have
AC on. Everything is fine until the car gets hot.
When outside temp goes around 90 degrees, it start to
act all funny. I understand the AC compressor eats
power, but it seems to eat too much power when it gets
hot.

AC compressor gets louder and almost sound like the
Supercharged engine. It's definitely quieter when
it's cooler. When it's hot, Engine stalls when I stop
the car or drop the rpm too quick. I have to rev up
to 2000rpm to launch without making the car stall.
And the car accelerate like a semi truck. When the AC
compressor kicks on, idle speed drops down to 300rpm
for a second then goes up to 900rpm. At this temp,
engine makes pinging/knocking noise. It used to start
pinging terribly at 70 degrees, but I had the
incorrectly set timing. It is better after I
corrected it, but it still pings a little when it is
over 95 degrees.

Next thing, when it goes up to 100 degrees, AC quits
working on me and blow hot smelly air. Engine start
to idle all weird like goes up and down between 900rpm
and 1300rpm.

Ok here is what I tried.
Fixed Ignition timing (10degrees), idle speed (625rpm
with TPS disconnected), cleaned fuel system, TB, MAF,
IAT, EGR valve, K&N filter, replaced PCV valve, Spark
plugs (NGK V-power gapped 0.044in), New NGK plug wire,
new Distributor cap/rotor, fuel filter. And I always
use premium gas. I found one bad vacuum hose connect
to the EGR valve so I replaced, but nothing had
changed. Did I miss anything?

That should take care the most pinging and stalling
problem, but something must be still wrong. Do you
guys have any idea? If you have any clue, please give
me some advice. I will appreciate your help.

Thanks!

Yosuke
