In my opinion Swing is NOT really nessessary. If you
are very cleaver with gridBagLayout and cardLayout you

can make perfectly functional AWT GUIs. The option
panes are nice but you can make your own option pane
class. The DB grid stuff is very nice but you can use
a text area or list box in combination with a text
field to do similar things. For applets I don't use
Swing but for applications I use it all the time.

Just my thougts,

James
