i am sorry, yes i am using tomcat..but i hv done
exactly as u hv said. Even the examples do not work
if i do not extract them into their respective
folders. But still i am hving the same problem. Tomcat does not
even recognise the .war files.

Anoop, What server are you using. Typically you just
put the war file in the web application directory of your server (its
<tomcat_install>/webapps for tomcat) and then restart your
server. The server will deploy the war file by opening it and
creating the directory tree.
You do not execute a .war file. Once
the server deploys the war file, then that web application should be
available on the server.
