Norbert, I think it's perfectly fine for this discussion to happen here.  This 
problem directly affects Shotwell (and affects a number of users!), so the more 
information we have, the better.

I thought to check the start-up programs but not the some of the other 
areas. Thanks for reminding me These days, I'm spending a lot of 
time playing with xfce so have gotten a little rusty with gnome (which 
I haven't had to tweak in a long time). I'll get back there in the 
morning . . .
