You might want to try the commercial sound drivers from www.4front-tech.com.
They charge, but $20 imho is worth it. (I too am a newbie and having problems.)
Their drivers autodetect PlugnPlay cards, and the configuration utility is
fairly painless. Once I get sound it's bye-bye win95. I can't wait. Good luck.
