Probably depends upon how you prioritize your life. I live in
Pleasanton and love it to death - it's one of the best family
environments and school districts around. Also, events are on all
over the Bay Area, and in SF - one of the advantages of Pleasanton is
easy access to SF via BART. If you network and go to evening events
anywhere in the bay area, you won't be home before young kids go to
bed :-) There is no single place in the Bay Area where you can live
and "be in the middle of it all".

There are also a lot of vibrant tech companies in Pleasanton, plus
office rentals are cheap - not to mention housing.

If business is your only priority, then probably best to get divorced
and leave your wife and kids in Australia :-). Seriously though,
people sometimes forget that to be productive at work, the family
needs to be settled and happy at home. I have seen entrepreneurs and
startups fail because they lack the common sense to create a stable
home life.
