Hi Matt, No the spam question was more of an afterthought question, the real need is how can I launch a service ONLY available to students via their student email at signup eg I was trying to workout how www.FreezeCrowd.com knows that an email address is afor a student and not just some domain they've never heard of before which is why I was asking if every college used the same format etc.
It appears from this discussion.....formats change...and there is no readily available database of global email aaddress formats. At UTS (where I do a bit of contract teaching for pennies & giggles), staff addresses are accessible via an public directory, student addresses are not. These guys appear to have compiled a partial opt-in database of student emails: http://www.studentmarketing.com.au/studentvip?gclid=CKPelKus67MCFQh66wod gB0A-A In terms of spam prevention, I suspect that universities use similar anti-spam tools to any other large organisation (identifies suspect domains, text strings, addressing behaviours).
