Dean, There are lists of universities out there on the web, which vary in terms of their scope and reliability. Others can probably advise on lists that might be purchased.
Otherwise, your mileage varies from country to country and how they've implemented their domain name regime. Looking at the English language world: - Australian universities, FE colleges, schools, pre-schools may get .edu.au domain names. So at a first approximation, any email address with .edu.au will belong to a student or a teacher. http://www.domainname.edu.au/Portals/0/pdf/Policy%202%20-%20edu%20au%20Eligibility%20Policy%202010.pdf - US unis will have a .edu domain (as do some other education institutions): http://net.educause.edu/edudomain/eligibility.asp - UK unis will have a .ac.uk domain (whereas schools use .sch.uk or .org.uk) - Canada has no domain specifically for unis. - NZ unis have the ac.nz - Singapore has the edu.sg domain. - India seems to use ac.in and .edu.in indiscriminately. It depends on which markets you want to focus on. I suspect that FreezeCrowd was focusing on the US market which has a relatively well-defined .edu domain.
