Corey, I just want to give you one piece of advice, even though I'm pretty sure you won't take it. I have been in *exactly* the same situation as you. That is; posting a ridiculously ambitious idea that 'solves' a huge 'problem' to this very mailing list, receiving a lot a "wow that's so awesome, I hope it works out!" and a lot of "you're a naive kid with a dream and some skills, but this idea doesn't solve a real problem and is too hard to get off the ground" too. Like you, I very much wanted my idea to succeed so I mostly ignored the negatives and focussed on the positives. I wanted desperately to class the negatives as petty detractors without any real vision, and the positives as awesome evangelists who just got it.
Stop doing that. Use some critical judgement and research the people replying. In both my case and yours, the negative people are those who've been through this - Clifford, Geoff (both of them!), Bart, etc. The positive people (and please excuse me if I mischaracterise you, positive people) are generally those who haven't. You should weight more highly the opinions of people who have the experience to back them up. This list has a lot of noisy idiots. It also has a lot of regulars who chime in with precise advice but drop back out if a flame war starts up. You'll want to see this as "their arguments couldn't stand the heat", but again, you'll be wrong. Best of luck with your entrepreneurial career. I don't think this idea is the one.
