Heh! Not at all. Just start listening. Get tapes/CDs. * Pay attention to the subtle changes in the way the singer repeats a particular line/stanza. The really good singers/instrument-players can repeat the same line about 5-6 times, each slicha better than the previous time, and building on it. To me, that's the best part about Carnatic music. This page has some good info. http://www.carnatica.net/sangeet/raganubhava1.htm C *Or, camp in Madras during Margazhi - that's Nov-Dec. That's the famous "Season" - loads and loads of performances, even more people, and good food. (And now, with the added attraction of gnashing your teeth and snarling at NRI folks throwing their weight around. :D {Before I am accused of stereotyping/whatnot, let me say I have more than my fair-share of NRI relatives who throw their weight around.} ) -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/ravages http://www.linkedin.com/in/ravages http://www.selectiveamnesia.org/ +91-9884467463
