 Tar water used to be a valued remedy.  Turpentine also.  The pinenes 
in the pine oil or sap are effective remedies for many maladies.

When I was 12 the docs put tar all over me, trouble was they did not 
know how to get it off, I must say it was extremely painful, they used 
gasoline to take the tar off.
