Val:
what I would do is give the unbleached coffee filters several good rinses with
distilled water (DW) before filtering your CS - next time! (Someone else
suggested this previously). That filter could be re-used several times before
having to use another one. I would use up the CS made so far and not save it
for an emergency. Even though it's probably not contaminated it may lose some
effectiveness within a few weeks.

I would then feel more confident using the freshly filtered (as above) to seed
each additional batch.

It was, also previously, stated that switching up your electrodes often helps
prevent the black sludgy buildup that has a tendency to fall into the CS when
you remove the electrodes. I began doing this. I switch up and reverse the
electrodes with each batch (I usually make a quart at a time). It definitely
helps. I also try to make my CS well before the moon sets, really, my CS would
turn all kinds of colors if I didn't pay attention and crank up the old 2X9 v
batteries after the moon sets (disappears). Mine usually takes 4 hours to run.
So I usually set it up 6 hours or so before then. I have also made it at 2 AM,
i.e. 6 hours after moon sets, which worked fine also. Sounds weird but it works
for me. I also stir my brew, manually, with a glass swizzle stick, every 15-30
minutes, while it's brewing.

I usually buy a gallon DW extra just for rinsing after cleaning the jar with
H2O2, if necessary. I used to heat the DW to speed things up but I start with
room temp now, which usually is near 85 degrees around here.

I'm sure others will have more to add.

Brita.
